Really enjoyed this one nice mix of different things to do and a great way to show off mixed reality
I've played this game, I wanted to get in to it, I've tried it multiple times. Each time I couldn't last more than 30 minutes in it. I'm sure there's a target audience, but that's not me.
My choice was the semi-realistic way of flying the drone, and it was so hard to aim the thing. Nothing really felt intuitive, and you had to be quite precise if you wanted to actually extinguish any flames. This game features multiple gamemodes which was quite nice and kept me entertained for a bit. There is a glaring issue with the zombie mode, to me at least they pose absolutely no threat; I just plop down the turret, and there, the level is done. The flood and alien ones were a bit better, but also with their own issues at hand.
Other than that, there are good things about in this game. The main gameplay is quite easy to grasp, and the graphics are surprisingly clear. I like that the game offers some customization and what I can only call "WIP Multiplayer". Another thing: bombing is fun, satisfying even. What I liked in the mixed reality mode was that it actually looked like I was destroying stuff and bumping in to my actual furniture and things.
I do believe that the game is quite janky, it really doesn't bring anything new to the world of VR games, BUT it is an enjoyable party game for at least a few hours. It could be fun getting a group of players in the same room and playing in turns or even at the same time.
Only thing I wish were different are the options to edit the controls. It's just a matter of getting used to them. But full customization would be preferable.
Did you grow up in the 80s arcades and looking for some old school style, simple arcade flying/shump game?
Or do you wish you could fly a drone in your own home without forking out for one?
Sky Runners could be what your looking for.
There's also a pretty decent course creator where you can build your own courses to race around in your own home.
Whilst the game may feel light on content at the moment.
The devs are hard at work updating the title There was a Christmas event that just passed with a full campaign and Multiplayer to come this year.
I can see myself returning back to the review and bumping the score up to a 5 if the Multiplayer and Campaign delivers.
I have faith that the team will get there soon!
Sky Runner is a LOT of fun to play. It takes a couple of levels to really get comfortable with the controls, but if you have any experience flying drones in real life that'll help a lot. It starts out slow so you can get a feel for how to handle the drone, and every level it ramps up more and more. Fly the drone around your living room, put out fires, rescue people, etc. If you ever played sim city just to cause disasters that you'd have to respond to, you'd really enjoy Sky Runner. There are achievements to do each level as well, so there's some replayability there if you want to 3 star the levels. If you want some hectic MR fun, I'd highly recommend Sky Runner!
The game handles Mixed Reality surprisingly well, especially considering the current limitations of the technology. You take on a variety of missions, including putting out fires and fighting zombies. The missions feel like what would happen if someone gave a drone to an action movie director and just let things unfold.
The gameplay is simple to understand, but the action can get pretty chaotic. If you are going for a perfect score, expect to replay a few levels. Flying the drone is easy to get started with, but it takes some finesse to stay in control when things start going off the rails. Honestly, I was just glad crashing into walls does not come with a penalty. They do offer control customization as well.
The humor is what gives this game its charm. If you are fine with a light story that mostly serves to set the stage, the ridiculous moments are part of the fun. Dropping explosive barrels on burning houses to rescue people makes absolutely no sense, and that is exactly what makes it entertaining.
I am not a drone pilot in real life, so I cannot say how realistic the controls are. But the game does let you adjust the control layout, which is a nice touch. It felt pretty intuitive overall, even when the action picked up and I started to panic a little.
The graphics are good. They are not cutting edge, but they look better than you might expect. Everything is clear, smooth, and works well for the tone the game is going for.
There is a level editor and a multiplayer mode, though I mostly played through the campaign. Whether the Mixed Reality experience feels believable will depend a lot on your room setup and lighting. Still, there is something genuinely fun about flying a tiny drone around your living room like you are in the middle of a cartoon emergency.
It is not a long game, and it is not trying to reinvent anything, but it is fun. If you like the idea of turning your space into a chaotic drone adventure, this is absolutely worth a look.
