I absolutely love this game! I got stuck midway and have been waiting for a fix, i just saw they have a patch so ima going to reinstall and patch and go again!
I mean, this is Riven by Cyan. Legendary series by legendary dev team. So after playing Myst, this was a buy without second thoughts. Oh boy, I was wrong. To be fair, this is on Quest 2. I know, the device is ancient, but this is all I have and if a game is released for Quest 2, the compromises should still be tolerable. But the frame rate stutters are everywhere, even in places without much details like tunnels, polygons popping in and out of existence and the textures shifting in quality only a few feet in front of you. Myst and other comparable games showed how to handle this differently. Are the sceneries so much more detailed here?
And then there are the bugs. Getting stuck with your head in the black void without knowing why, at some point even losing continuous movement completely and needing to restart the game. Teleport usage instead is wonky. Elevators disappearing completely, the player height sometimes shifting (I was continuously shrinking and at some point tilted by 20 degrees). Even comfort settings do not appear to do what the explanation says (window tinting during transit?). Objects or water misplaced in depth or height position. In sum, often breaking immersion.
All in all, and sorry if this may sound offensive, but this feels like compared to Myst, implementation was rushed or maybe Quest 3-focused only. At least testing feels incomplete. Of course, I am aware that it is hard to build a profitable business from sales in VR and therefore compromises need to be made.
In the end, would I have bought Riven knowing this? Maybe still yes. Should you buy it? I do not know. If unsure, wait for a sale. The game by itself was and is fantastic (but hard and nothing as a casual experience). Would I buy Exile if it would ever come out? I do not know.
Played all the Myst games yeeeears ago and loved them. It was amazing to play them in VR and I was hooked.
A few glitches here and there but nothing that detracted from the experience significantly. Loved it!
As a long time cyan worlds fan way back. I wanted this new revision of the classic to be great. This was the first game I played from them and it was the catalyst for my obsession with the must series of games and books. However this version of it seems to miss the mark entirely on a technical stand point. The downgrade is more drastic then I think it should have been and even with the drastic downgrade it still has a myriad of bugs, frame rate hitches and texture issues, the game is a chore to even play. This seems to be an issue more or less of continued support for the game as it has not had a patch for almost 9 months from its release. Cyan, you’re better than this.
I think I should get a refund or a PC version to try again
This is brilliant, a little bit of patience is required for occasional loading of islands and the pods but this is one of the best games on quest 3. My head is hurting but that’s good because I’m totally immersed in this world of riven. It’s exploration and problem solving across the various islands, obviously if you have played this before that is going to help but it doesn’t take anything away from experiencing this in VR which is brilliant! Some things have changed like the layout and there are some new things to solve. The omission of humans as the characters is okay because the computer ones are so life like which is a welcome surprise. Cyan have done an excellent job
And hopefully we shall see the other myst games on the quest in the future?
