Updated 2025
RIP Orbus you were fun while you lasted. Sadly the devs didn't really seem interested in releasing more DLC to keep their financial support going.
Still worth a play for a bit if you'd like to get a peek into some of the possibilities of a VR MMO, though not without a heavy bit of jank here and there.
I'd say Ilysia is the only currently viable option to scratch that VR fantasy MMO itch ATM, albeit it is still in Early Access and development. Though with the last update it definitely feels more like a game instead of just an alpha. It's come a long way but it's got a long way yet to go, but if you're okay with that it's worth a look.
Zenith...... Is a reminder of what the devs should never do, I guess it's around but it's more or less dead as far as I know 🤷♀️
If you need that MMO itch scratched and a Sci-Fi option peaks ones interest then vendetta online is pretty good too. So far in my experience a well done VR Port of an older MMO, though it seems to be flying under the radar. The reviews it has gotten has been overwhelmingly in the positive though 👍
As for Orbus, you got me into VR and had me buying the OG Oculus Quest. We had fun, I'll always have fond memories of the hundreds of hours I spent with you. It is time for my musketeer to hang up there gun and put away their turret. Though they'll always be future adventures to be had in other games.
Updated 2022
Still currently the best VR MMORPG to date IMO. The newcomer Zenith is a bag of bugs & incomplete mechanics/systems wrapped in a pretty package but not a lot else so far. The only thing Zenith has over Orbus is maybe subjectively a "prettier" art style & a more seamless world, less zone loading.
Pros
There’s some good content to be had & there’s been significant improvements since the release. Though said improvements can & have been slow in coming overall, though I suspect that's more to do with the size of the dev team. Additional content follows a similar slow release trend & seems to mostly cater to their core end game audience & not to the new/casual player base. This isn't always the case just seems to happen more often than not, so be aware.
The game includes a fairly decent variety of classes with unique play styles. Plus you can level and switch between them at will on one character which honestly I feel should be the standard these days IMO.
There is quite an extensive amount of content to be had & is well worth the price of admission. The player character art style may be a little divisive being highly stylized/cartoony, but if you can get by that I think it looks pretty good overall. The world has also continued to be flushed out visually since the games release.
Cons
I still find myself asking why haven't they added a seated mode in game. Thankfully there is now an accessibility option in the Quest settings out of game..... Still though the dev's never addressed the issue themselves.
The game could still greatly benefit from more robust social features. Such as more voice chat channels. A more robust fully featured friends list with maybe either voice messages or at least voice to text instead of the clunky keyboard would be nice when sending messages to offline friends.
I feel like the devs may take for granted that while their PC VR players can use discord and other such social tools their Quest player base cannot easily access the same third party options to make up for the lack of the above mentioned social features.
Some of the classes still feel more complete than others IMO. Also some of the optimal play styles for a couple of the classes aren't super interesting. IE Rune mage's who cast a variety of spells & or their higher difficulty versions in an encounter should be more rewarding more than spell spamming speed IMO. Of course in that example nothing is stopping you from doing just that, but I just have never seen any indication that you won't be lower on the DPS because of it.
A personal gripe....I have played since release & my player journal still has bugged/blank spell page(s) that don't display.....WHY!? Even after they updated the journal this bug remains for me to this day, for at least one spell. I hope this doesn't happen to new players anymore, but why has this not been fixed. If this turns out it was fixed.....then why wasn't it retroactively fixed for older characters?
Conclusion
In the end this game still reminds me a lot of early EverQuest honestly. Back in the day when MMO’s we’re just finding their footing and figuring out what worked & what didn’t etc. It definitely brought back that feeling I had playing an MMO the first time
The game has a fairly large player base and the devs are still developing & adding to the game, but some of the core issues still remain.
Some of the design decisions still feel very dated “early VR”, it’s a tough one to describe but you’ll know it when you see/experience it.
I’d still recommend it for anyone looking for an MMO experience in VR, but my comparison of it feels a lot like EverQuest still remains true. A valiant first attempt at the genre but may still be overshadowed by future VR MMORPG game releases.
This game had one of the best communities ever. The gameplay was superb, and you could feel the care and passion of the developers in every little thing. It's such a shame that we've gotta lose such a gem of a game, but every second spent on it was more than worth it.

The things that you have done for me to help me get through hard times is endless. I can’t even exsplain the gratitude I owe this game. Orbus VR wasn’t just a game to me it was a lifestyle and nothing can change my mind. Now that it’s gone I’m not sure where to go. You may know me as - StormHammero
Orbus is and always will be the single best RPG game ever made. It truly captures the role playing element of RPGs. The game felt like a second world, my guild members like a second family. This game isn’t the same generic formula of grinding to get higher numbers and better stats so you can press one button. Armor means nothing compared to irl skill. If you gave a brand new player a max level account and a max level and brand new account the old max level would be much more useful. Players can run their own shops, and you’ll almost exclusively be buying from other players. Along with the 8 classes there are “jobs” you can have too and be even more invested in the world. You could fish, make potions, be a harvester, breed dragons, sell dyes, or you could simply just be a mentor and teach new players things you’ve learned. This game captures what SAO was, with an economy, jobs, and classes almost solely determined by the players themselves. The only thing npc’s do is mainly give you quests. All the other vr RPGs like Zenith or Elysium are hollow clones of what this game was and aren’t even worth the time of day.
To the amazing devs and community, I truly thank you for an incredible 5 years of vr gaming. This game would be nothing without its amazing community and its community would have never met without this game. And to everyone thinking of buying this game I hate to say it but you should rethink it, this game just simply isn’t what it used to be, but I and all the other players will always have the impression this game left on us. And if it’s true that you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain, I’m glad Orbus died a hero. Goodbye Orbus Vr. Goodbye to the king of RPGs.
Orbus is officially gone, it was an absolute honor to spend its last moments with its amazing community.
Was just getting back into and found out it's leaving. Thanks for all the hard work and effort put into this game. I will definitely be playing Eldramoor when yall get it out.
