To be fair and give credit where credit is due the story is amazing and this is supposed to be an interactive VR "movie" not a game. On the other hand (spoiler) you only get to use the Gundam's true power once, not in a full fight just in a singular interaction. There's really not enough fighting when there could be and while for a lot of games a major issue is how much things are repeated but in this it's the other way around, something will be introduced and then you'll only use it 2-4 times. Once again, amazing story tho and an appearance of my GLORIOUS GOAT Amuro Ray.
This is like being in a 5D movie. Soooo much better than 3D. I finished the movie and will go though it again.
This is a movie with game play elements. Not the other way around
There was almost no gameplay, Even then the controls are janke, no skip able cut scenes, and the cut scenes go on for over an hour. To top it off what little gameplay there is makes you look like you have the hub up and is giving someone else a hand
not a game, more like a disney ride, love gundam but this feels like a lost opportunity
As a Gundam fan I really wanted to like this. I expected a mostly hands off experience peppered with interactive events, and got that. But there are some annoying issues and poor design choices. To name a few: I can't exit the game, the Oculus button brings up a frozen or super-slow menu that I can't use to exit; sometimes the game shifts my position within the cockpit slightly; the subtitles are hard to read and focus eyes on; English script and voice acting are mediocre (making it consistent with most of Gundam, I suppose); and the suddenly changing camera positions during cutscenes takes some getting used to. However the music is excellent, and the renderings of characters and mechanical objects are great.
- The main content of the game is around 2 hours of story driven content. The dialogue while voiced well is shaky, and the mechanics leave more to be desired. If you are a Gundam fan and *new* to VR this should be fun. If you are not *new* to VR it is quite disappointing as it follows a rigid story driven path that has limited control and freedom. I had a few issues in particular that I believed needed improving or revising, especially for a future title that I'll list below the tldr.
- TLDR; while engaging it lacks good mechanics in the not so engaging story that seems to have misplaced its efforts.
- Issues;
- - My biggest issue was the choice to use vertical back and forth controls for the Gundam and not tilt and/or trigger controls.
- - The look mechanic was interesting at first but should be reconsidered as, personally, I'd rather use the motion of my controls for movement. Like tilting in a fighter jet.
- - Optimization; it was going to be on here don't kid yourselves. Constant load screens that while quick, were still constant. If games like Contractors can find a way around them I don't think it's asking much for a theatrical style media to avoid them or at least come up with a unique/smooth transition. This was very Bethesda-y.
- Personal Notes; I'm not the most driven lore seeker for Gundam so perhaps I'm not the intended audience, but as a huge VR gamer, I expect more for the cost than a mid VR experience. The bonus content is unique and cool, more Gundam-y and fan focused with unique gimmicks. Maybe it's because I'm a kit builder, but if the gameplay isn't going to be enthralling like Titanfall or armored core, which was not what I was expecting going into it, than I was hoping for some serious attention to detail befitting a that of an experience, i.e. gimmicks. GIMMICKS like activating unique modes or the core fighter or something more.
- Final Notes; Stepping away from everything I'd like an phasis on what I believe is a core part of Gundam, and that is the gimmicks/detail. I think as a starting point for exploring VR as a medium this title is fine, however, I hope that there are many, and I do mean many takeaways for what is hopefully another much better future installment. BANDAI can and has done some amazing work and each model kit is incredibly well thought out so it's my hope that the same is done for VR in the future. Thank you for your time.
