MEMOREUM is a VR sci-fi action horror campaign. The Ichor Infection has taken over the last ship of humanity. You are Dr. Otto Hudson, fighting to unravel the mystery behind the outbreak as your fragmented mind slips from reality.

UNRAVEL THE MYSTERY ABOARD THE CENTURY DAWN

The year is 2311. Ripped from your stasis pod, you find a very different ship from the one you left behind. The inhabitants have lost any shred of humanity, and your only hope comes from a scrambled voice, guiding you through the darkness. Is this reality, or just another symptom?

FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE

Take up arms against those you swore an oath to save, build an arsenal of unique and powerful weapons to face the monstrosities of the Ichor Infection, and scavenge what you can to survive. But as you adapt, the infected will do the same…

FROM THE TEAM BEHIND RETURN TO RAPTURE

Work on MEMOREUM began 4 years ago, after the success of Patient 8 Games’ hit Half-Life: Alyx mod, Return To Rapture. Inspired by sci-fi survival classics, MEMOREUM is a world that bends reality in ways only VR can deliver.

Devs please help!

So far this game has been a blast! But, problem is that I have made it to an area I can't get past. I'm in the labs searching for Horus. I'm a little over an hour in, killed 1 exotic, and have made it to a door that will not open. I've restarted the level, walked as far back through the level as I can, scanned everything, and still can't go any further. My last attempt at the door I decided to quit playing. I had my back towards the door that will not open and pushed the meta button to bring up the home screen menu. Before I selected to quit, a dialog came up at the bottom. It was of a creature and said: "I won't hurt you". So I hit the quest button again to resume the game, and all of a sudden the creature ( who I think may have been Horus )was attacking me from behind. I was able to kill him without much of an issue. He seemed to be wearing something yellow on his arm and I assumed it was a key card for the door. He fell on top of both of his arms and I wasn't able to get anything from him, or go through the door. I want to finish the game but it seems to be a glitch that hasn't been resolved. I have read a few other reviews mentioning something similar to what I'm experiencing. There are no vents along the way, ( other than the one the space guy comes out off right before I get to where Im at, and you can't go through it ) or any other doors that I haven't ventured through. Please help. Thanx in advance! I will definitely leave a 5 star review when this issue gets resolved!

Edit: I figured out what I "wasn't" doing right. Thanks for the help!

A Formal Review

Ive been excited to play this game for over a year now since their announcement after "Return to Rapture."

My first run through was about 8 hours but mind you i like to take my time and role play.

Reading these reviews I think we need to set up some expectations:

1. This game was originally being made for the quest 2 and even though the graphics are far from being modern (post update) remember fidelity will always become outdated but game design is FOREVER.

2. This is a tiny team and with that they most likely have what I assume is a shoe string budget.

3. This is on stand alone and for what it is, they are squeezing every ounce of power they can out of the system (an impressive feat). I played the entire game on my quest 2 without a single crash.

Ok now for my actual review. I will avoid all spoilers so some points will be left vague because its your opinion that is going to be the final decision if you choose to play this game.

Right off the bat this game is a solid 4/5 for a relatively new game studio.

General aesthic and atmosphere are spot on. I've played "Cosmodread" for that Dead Space vibe but the rouge lite ruins it. No story no stakes no purpose other than to waste time. (Which i very much recommend. Best space rouge lite) and recently "By Grit Alone" released and was supposed to be "Dead space in vr" but I personally felt it was more "Bioshock in space" but even if it was Dead Space vr, i believe that title has been usurped by Memorium

The story is lengthy and has substance. Voice acting and sound design in general is brilliant. I was upset with the whole "Wake up from cyrosleep with amnesia" since thats been so overplayed since system shock 1 but then it hit me. This game is not "Dead Space VR" but more "System shock in VR" not as immersive in terms of mechanics but VR in general is immersive and has different mechanics than an IMSIM. Great story telling and general vibe felt very system shock. The puzzles arent simple enough to insult your intelligence but also arent that complicated that they would insult your intelligence. Most functions work fine, sometimes gripping isnt responsive but thats a general jank VR issue.

Now how is the combat? The thing that makes up over half your game play loop?

Its awful.

I understand the difficulties making an FPS (let alone in VR) but the combat pulls me out of the immersion. You will see where the leaks in the Crack are and its not game breaking but it is noticeable. Its not chunky or visceral. I cant understand if they are taking a RE4 approach by focusing on combat and staying a little arcadey or an RE1 approach of being slow and methodical to build tension. Most new game devs still dont understand you cant have your cake and eat it. In combat alone, it felt like they wanted to make a little bit of everything to make everyone happy rather than committing to a style of design.

So far a great example of their faults are boss fights. I know boss fights in VR in general are never satisfying (for reference i think "The light brigade" is the only vr game ive seen boss fights done right) but they dropped the ball. If youve ever plays deus ex HR you have felt this disappointment before.

But that is all the bad. Inventory management is decent and unique enough. Felt very much like WDS&S had a baby with "Propogation paradise hotel"

I want to talk about the story but it is interesting enough to carry the game and I want you to experience it. The only thing I will say is a complaint. Its a complete IMO type of moment but it just makes no sense you play as a doctor who basically turns into a killer. This was my issue with Issac Clarke tbh and I miss having "every man" characters in horror. Kinda like Harry in SH1 and I think it would solve their issue on committing on being a survival horror or an action horror.

Final thoughts:

The Hakari pistol you first start with will become an iconic gun like judge dread or blade runner no doubt. Some enemies speak to you and it's haunting. They hit you with cheap jump scares you know are coming, but they still get you. The random miraj moments are incredible and make me feel like im play FEAR. There is an economy and a decent variety of weapons for you to experiment with. All speaking characters are engaging and at least half of the written lore is as well.
The game has an incredible air to it, i enjoy just standing in it. The story is not boring and you can peice some things together through texts and enviormental story telling. I hate we dont have any control over our flashlight. I get it, you want to control some of your frights but sometimes it is so dark in non scary area, it borders on frustrating and decentivies exploration.

This game is well worth your time and $30 for at least 8 hours of enjoyment, what a bargin. I hope Patient 8 makes more games and yes they made "Return to Rapture" but that was a mod. This indie team finally decided to make a video game and, if im not mistaken, this is their first. Hats off to the team. Buy this game.

Wow — thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and detailed review!
It really means a lot to us that you’ve followed Memoreum since its announcement after Return to Rapture, and that you took the time to explore every detail of the world we’ve built.

We’re incredibly happy to hear that the story, sound design, and atmosphere resonated with you. As a small, independent team working within the limits of standalone hardware, it’s wonderful to know that players appreciate the care and effort that went into the worldbuilding, tone, and pacing.

Your comparisons to System Shock and Bioshock are especially flattering — both series have been huge inspirations for us in shaping Memoreum’s identity and tone. We’re also really glad you enjoyed the voice acting, puzzles, and narrative structure.

Thank you again for supporting Patient 8 and giving Memoreum a chance. Hearing feedback like this is what keeps us motivated to keep creating and pushing forward in VR storytelling.

Very nice, but two big things

The atmosphere is amazing. For standalone, it looks so nice and sweet🥰
Even the story is Exciting and gripping. However, there are two points of criticism, and I really hope the devs read this and fix it. First, the animations of (all) the enemies seem so stiff. It would be nice if they moved a little more smoothly. And second, there's no hit feedback from the human enemies. No blood when hit, and no movement either. This doesn't feel good and completely kills the immersion. I actually wanted to keep playing, but now I'd rather wait and see if the devs will take action. I really hope so. If those two things get fixed, it's definitely a five star game.

Great game but…

Let me just start off by saying i really enjoy this game so dont let the 3 star fool you. The only thing holding back a 5 star is the weight of the weapons and how the enemies react to getting shot. The weapons feel weightless when holding them as well as when shooting them, especially the cobras, the shot guns feel good but i think they should try and make the guns feel a little heavier. And when the bullet hits the enemy sometikes they just sont readt well and you can hardly tell they are being hit. If those two things can be worked out then this will he a greag game. I cant wait until the pcvr version comes out

It’s a good game, but…

I loved the game, great action, good story and better game play, bout there is one major problem that I despise, at certain points I will load the game or die then reload the checkpoint only to find that I can no longer continue due to a glitch.

I’m sorry guys but if you don’t get this problem fixed it’s going to brush away any people who want to play this game.

Update

The part that I am stuck at is in Jades lab, I managed to get the pistol upgraded but once I got that I couldn’t leave the adjacent area, and when I reloaded the save I couldn’t get back into the laboratory or go anywhere.

Hey, I get that you’re frustrated, but your explanation really doesn’t help us figure out what’s going on. You mention a glitch — but what exactly happens? On which level? At what point in the game?

Other players have been able to finish the game without running into this issue, so it sounds like something specific to your setup or save file. If you can give us more details, we’ll actually be able to look into it and help you out. come to discord and i can help you out in 5min!
