Cool idea but not working for me

I am having an impossible time getting the page to line up with my page. When I am able to get it close then it wants me to reach through solid objects like my table to push the continue button. If I’m able to somehow defy physics and do that, then I have to pick up the controller and attempt the impossible after every step to get to the next step. Very frustrating.

I also can not figure out where to upload my own images.

Thanks for the feedback. We are getting ready to release a new update that should address some of those issues.

In the current version you can grab the handle below objects to move them closer if needed, but we could do a better job pointing that out.

Aside from calibration (which the new update will add hand support for) the whole app is interactable with hand tracking. So you shouldn’t have to pick up a controller for anything.

For importing images, you can use this tutorial we made here: https://youtu.be/7s7upDP_aVs?si=zjhNOh26xT0TwzAS. We are also working on making this clearer

If you have any other feedback we’d love to hear it in our discord! Hope you get the chance to try it again soon once the update is live.

Best,

Learn to Draw – The VR Way!

Pencil – Learn to Draw! is a fantastic use of VR beyond traditional gaming. The clever frame system makes practicing drawing intuitive, especially with adjustable opacity that helps you trace and learn on “real” paper inside VR. The available drawing templates are fun and motivating, and the included tutorials cover important fundamentals like shading, perspective, and anatomy. You can even create your own collage-style compositions!

Even better, the studio has released a manga-focused DLC — perfect for anime fans who want to improve their art style. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your technique, this app is an inspiring tool that turns the Quest into a creative studio. A must-try for anyone curious about drawing in immersive space.

Serious problems

I look forward to the development of this very interesting app, but at the moment it is plagued by many bugs and problems with the interface.
There is no way to easily change the depth (height from the table) while working on a picture. The only way is to recalibrate the virtual sketch, which completely takes it off the table and requires a complete new calibration. Worst of all, if you don't complete the drawing in one go and have to return to it later, the interface makes it almost impossible to realign your work. The controls on a similar program, Sketch, are much more intuitive and easy to use to realign work later.
Add to that that the program is extremely buggy and with every small interface change the virtual photo completely disappears and is replaced by three dots, forcing a quit and restart, and this program is unfortunately nearly unusable at the moment. I look forward to seeing its development and hope that some of these problems get ironed out soon.

Thanks for the great feedback.
For the height adjustment, there is an option in the menu to reenter calibration without resetting things to the controller, but clearly that's hard to find. We either need to make onboarding about that, or more likely, just make it easier to recalibrate cleanly. We'll definitely put this on our list and work on a better plan.
And we apologize for the free draw image issue. We'd seen it before, but thought it was dealt with. We'll dig into this as well and work on a solution ASAP.

The BEST mixed reality experience

I went from not really understanding “drawing” to genuinely appreciating my own art within just an hour of using Pencil.

Pencil should be a mandatory experience for anyone beyond grade school.

It rekindles the habit of exploration, joy, and creativity that so many of us have lost.

Huge thanks to the devs for making Pencil a reality!

still needs work

Great potential, but calibration and alignment to paper is not accurate enough. images are above or below actual paper surface so your drawing 'float' making any head movements shift alignment. Also cannot see pencil nib clearly enough for tracing to work, for me this is fundamental for the app to work. worth keeping an eye on, but for me, I consider this currently broken/incomplete. Also, maybe I missed it, but a basic video tutorial would greatly help.

Thanks for the feedback. Some of what you've mentioned is partially solved by existing features (handle to move the tracing layer up & down, slider to hide the tracer so you can see your pencil more clearly), but they are not communicated well. Onboarding is high on our list, as is refining the early alignment of the drawing surface. This feedback is super helpful and we really appreciate it. We'll be working on features to help smooth the process for you.
Thanks again!
