Power-to-X, or PtX for short, refers to the conversion of electricity from renewable energy sources into other substances. In Power-to-Gas, electricity is converted into hydrogen or hydrogen-based compounds. Power-to-Chemicals uses electricity to produce chemical feedstocks that can be further processed industrially and replace fossil raw materials. In Power-to-Fuel, synthetic fuels are produced from CO2 and water using renewable electricity. This allows for a significant reduction in emissions compared to fossil fuels.
Germany aims to be climate-neutral by 2045. The Kopernikus projects are making an important contribution to this goal: partners from science, industry, and civil society are developing solutions for a clean, secure, and affordable energy supply—including Power-to-X.
The goal of the Kopernikus P2X project is to develop technologies and processes that can convert and store renewable energy. This allows energy in the form of hydrogen, its derivatives, or e-fuels to be used in a more climate-friendly manner in industry, transportation, and heating. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).
